Morgan Sindall starts work on £2 million extension to Wellington Community Primary School

Morgan Sindall has been appointed to a £2 million contract to extend Wellington Community Primary School, in Aldershot.

The project, for Hampshire County Council, will comprise the expansion of the existing Wellington Community Primary School site to update facilities and provide school places for 420 pupils from the local area, ready for a new intake of pupils in September 2015.

The extension, which is already underway, will see the project team construct six new purpose built classrooms and build a new multi-purpose community room. The project will also include sustainable features, with the project team installing photovoltaic panels on the roof to store and convert solar energy into electricity.

Morgan Sindall will also be undertaking external landscaping and creating a new multi-purpose games area for pupils to enjoy during break and lunch times.

Tim Elliott, special works manager at Morgan Sindall, said: “We are very pleased to have been appointed to the expansion of Wellington Community Primary School. The expansion works will update the school’s facilities and ensure that it is able to meet growing demand for school places, creating a valuable asset for the local community.

“Morgan Sindall has extensive experience in delivering education projects, and we look forward to bringing this to bear on this project.”

David England, Head Teacher of the school, said: “Now that the school has been operating for two years as a split campus primary, it’s an exciting time to see the next phase of the school’s development beginning to take place in moving the school community on to a single site. Our motto, ‘Together for Excellence’ will take on a new direction as we bring both campuses together in stunning grounds with up-to-date facilities and resources.”

The works will be completed in a live school environment, with the project team putting a number of precautions in place to ensure on-site safety. These measures involve erecting hoardings and timing deliveries to suit the school timetable in order to minimise disruption.
