Morgan Sindall plc celebrates topping out at pioneering Arts University Bournemouth drawing studio
Morgan Sindall plc has celebrated a key milestone in the construction of a £1.7 million drawing studio at the Arts University Bournemouth with a traditional topping out ceremony.
The ceremony was held at the project to celebrate the topping out of the drawing studio, a freestanding steel pre-fabricated pavilion that has been specially designed to stimulate creativity.
The building has been designed by influential architect Professor Sir Peter Cook, a former student at the Arts University. The studio will include a large north-light, which is traditional in studios, a rear clerestory window light that gives a softer light from the rear wall, a discrete light that filters under a bench on the east side of the building and a graded wash of light that feeds in along the curved entrance. The different lights are designed to reflect the central theme of light in the tradition of looking and drawing.
The pre-fabricated structure has been imported from Germany and fixed onto the existing structure. This has then been treated to give a continuous white surface. The internal surfaces will be white with a grey floor with a simple exterior of curved, blue steel.
Attendees toasted the topping out with champagne and Professor Sir Peter Cook attended the special ceremony along with Professor Stuart Bartholomew CBE, Principal and Vice Chancellor at Arts University Bournemouth.
Professor Stuart Bartholomew CBE, Principal and Vice Chancellor at Arts University Bournemouth, said: ‘This unique building by an alumnus of the University places drawing at the centre of the experience for a wide range of our students. It celebrates the importance of drawing to the creative process and the realisation of original work’.
Jon Daines, special works director at Morgan Sindall, said: “The new facility at Arts University Bournemouth is distinct in its creativity. The building will provide a wonderful facility for students above and beyond traditional teaching spaces.
“The topping out ceremony is a great way to celebrate the progress made on the project and the Drawing Studio is really starting to take shape ahead of completion.”
The project is due for completion in 2015.
Richard Guppy, Head of Estates Development, at The Arts University Bournemouth stated, “Creating such an exciting and unique asset for the University has been a very rewarding experience. AUB continues to adopt leading construction technologies and standards, in its estate developments, including further Passivhaus and BREEAM Excellent accredited buildings as part of its Estates Master Plan”.
The Poole office of Morgan Sindall is currently on site at a number of projects at the University and in the area, including a £1.3 million contract to deliver new beach huts on Poole’s beaches. The project for Poole Borough Council will see the Morgan Sindall team construct 88 two-storey beach huts at Branksome Chine (East and West) and Flaghead Chine to help reduce the waiting list and extend the choice of huts available.
