Colas Rail Morgan Sindall joint venture awarded Paddington Station refurbishment work

As part of the Multi Asset Framework Agreement, a joint venture between Colas Rail and Morgan Sindall has been awarded a £20 million project from Network Rail to refurbish roof spans one to three at Paddington Station. The joint venture will work collaboratively with Network Rail under BS11000, to jointly deliver the scheme.

The contract follows Morgan Sindall’s successful completion of Paddington Station’s Span 4 which was finished in September 2011. The team was recognised for its achievements on Span 4 with a number of industry awards.

Spans one to three were built by 19th Century engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and are listed by English Heritage as a Grade 1 structure. The refurbishment of the spans will improve the internal appearance and environment of the station and extend the service life of the roof.

Work will include steelwork strengthening and repairs to the original wrought iron structure and decorative scrolls. In addition, the lighting system will be upgraded and the polycarbonate roof lights replaced. The team will also undertake internal redecoration and make improvements to the roof drainage.

Neil Barnes, Rail Director at Morgan Sindall, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to the next phase of refurbishment at Paddington Station.

“Our team has a wealth of specialist rail experience and will carry out the work from a suspended scaffold above the live railway platforms to ensure the day to day running of the station can continue with minimal disruption.”

Work is due to start at the end of July and is due to be completed by January 2016.

Other work the Colas Rail and Morgan Sindall joint venture is undertaking as part of the Multi Asset Framework Agreement (MAFA) for Network Rail includes the circa £35 million Swindon to Kemble Redoubling, and freight train lengthening projects in Oxford and Eastleigh worth around £36 million. The joint venture has also completed the new £5.2 million Energlyn and Churchill Park Station near Caerphilly which was opened early and on budget in December.
