Working as part of the Slough Urban Renewal (SUR) partnership, Morgan Sindall extended and refurbished the existing Slough Ice Arena to provide a modern, larger ice facility complemented by a new climbing centre.
The extended Ice Arena’s structure features three wooden glulam beam arches, each of which weighs three tonnes and stands at 30 metres wide and 12 metres high. Works also included a two-storey canopy extension that houses a new entrance, reception, café, gym, climbing wall and clip n' climb facility.
A re-clad of the building has improved its external appearance, whilst extensive landscaping and public realm works transformed the space outside the arena, creating a strong visual link to the adjacent Bath Road and Salt Hill Park.
The building is nicknamed ‘The Hangar’ by fans of the Slough Jets ice hockey team, which is based at the arena and makes use of the new ice pad, spectator seating, lighting and refurbished changing facilities. The project has revitalised this popular leisure destination, enabling it to serve the community for years to come.
Slough Urban Renewal (SUR) is a partnership between Slough Borough Council and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd, which is driving regeneration across Slough including in leisure, housing, community and school buildings.
Improving The Environment
Special consideration was given to the adjacent Montem Mound, which has Scheduled Ancient Monument status - a designation protecting it as a nationally important archaeological site. No works were allowed to disrupt the mound, and site hoardings were carefully positioned to ensure it was protected.
Morgan Sindall replaced the footpath that goes over the mound and this landscaping was then integrated into the design of the whole site, including the building and outside space.
100% of waste on the project was recycled.
"The success of the grand opening this weekend and all the positive comments from local people is testament to the hard work and effort the Morgan Sindall team have put into this major refurbishment and extension. Andy Howell
“The Council has demonstrated real vision for the Ice Arena, and Slough Urban Renewal is delighted to have been part of delivering this great new leisure facility for the borough. Hopefully the Arena will put Slough on the map for everything 'on ice'."
