- RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS
The Electricity Alliance Central (EAC) is a consortium between Morgan Sindall, ABB and Atkins to deliver major enhancements to the UK’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
Typical works include the design, construction and commissioning of 132kV, 275kV and 400kV substations and associated civil engineering infrastructure including low voltage mechanical and electrical elements. The schemes vary in complexity and scale and range from £10 million to £120 million in value.
Until April 2013 each scheme followed a ‘cradle to grave’ approach to delivery, which provided an opportunity for the project team to influence all schemes at the early stages of development, allowing for value engineering techniques to be effectively employed. Since April 2013 and OFGEM’s introduction of the RIIO (Revenue = Incentives + Innovation + Outputs) framework, which sets price controls for network companies, the design development element of the project life cycle is now undertaken in house, with the Alliance focusing on the detailed design and delivery.
The initial Area Alliance Agreement was for five years with an option to extend for a further five. This option was awarded, and as such the contract ran until 2017.
Extensive training and development opportunities were provided for all directly employed members of the project team.
Improving the environment
The WRAP waste recycling protocol was adopted to allow extensive recycling of materials between schemes on the Alliance. In addition, lime stabilisation was used at our Stoke Bardolph site to treat contaminated land in situ.
